Cambridge, UK, December 2006 - CSTC Ltd spin-out company UltraSoC Technologies has been tipped as a key future business winning a trophy and £10,000 in the prestigious Research Councils UK Business Plan Competition 2005-06 at the Royal Society in London. UltraSoC Ltd has developed a unique platform technology, protected by a suite of patents, that make it easier to find and mend faults or ‘bugs’ in embedded computer systems. With the continued miniaturisation of computer systems and system-on-chips (SoCs) it is becoming increasingly difficult to detect and mend these ‘bugs’ which cost manufacturer’s huge sums in lost revenues. The company is developing software and hardware tools that will enable system developers to see what is going on inside the SoCs where faults are hard to detect, enabling designers of embedded to speed up diagnosis and correction. Furthermore, with increases system visibility, designers can optimise their products to make them perform more efficiently and safely.

UltraSoC’s CTO Dr Klaus McDonald-Maier said: ‘We believe our debug support strategy for next-generation system-on-chip technology will have enormous benefits in lowering manufacturing costs and improving safety in a wide range of computer and semiconductor applications. Being so highly placed in this extremely competitive event demonstrates that others share that vision.’

The award ceremony was presided over by The Minister of State for Energy in the Department for Trade and Industry MP Malcolm Wicks praised the finalists on the quality of their business propositions reminding them ‘of the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship to the growth of the UK economy.’
