Founder's Biography
Dr S Karl Heeks serves as Principal Consultant and CEO of CSTC which he founded in 2003. He has over 20 years experience in senior technical and commercial roles in blue chip and high profile technology start-ups. He is experienced in driving technology and commercial business strategy, business development, licensing and marketing in Europe, USA and Asia. He has 40 patents granted and pending worldwide in areas of high technology particularly in the area of organic semiconductors and nanotechnology and has managed pan-global technical programmes which have included the transfer of technology from the laboratory to pilot and volume production. He has recently been working with blue chip organisations, SMEs, Universities in both the UK and US, and government laboratories commercialising new and high technology. He has also led the creation, and finance, of a number of spin-out companies and successfully negotiated royalty baring licenses in Europe, Asia and the US.
He was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Mac Robert Award in 2002, the UK largest and most prestigious engineering prize for his ‘outstanding contribution by way of innovation in the field of engineering’. He is frequently quoted in the press and has appeared on ITN news, channel 4 in the UK, and ChannelNewsAsia as well as being featured on Materials World on BBC Radio 4. His work has also been exhibited by the British Science Museum. He recently sat on the steering committee of Finance South East’s Proof-of-Concept Fund and co-authored the successful £4.5 million CommercialiSE bid which provides a funding accelerator for businesses in the South East of England.
Previously he was Director of business development at Cambridge Display Technology Ltd. Business developments and successful marketing led to the Company being ranked number 1 in the UK and 4th in overall in Europe with the largest increase in revenue for the year in the Deloitte and Touche Eastern Technology Fast 500 Award in 2002. The Company was also named in Europe’s hottest technology firms in Time Magazine in that year. Prior to joining CDT he held various technical management positions in GEC plc. He is a science graduate from Leeds University and has a PhD in Chemical Physics from Southampton University in the UK.
